The big band sound hit Llangarron on Saturday 21st courtesy of the 30-strong Hereford Concert Band and, despite the wet and windy weather, filled St Deinst church with happy people and vibrant sound. Under the baton of animated Musical Director Alfred Tubb, they delighted the audience with a varied programme ranging from time-honoured classics to more contemporary arrangements from Paint Your Wagon and the Phantom of the Opera. Particularly noteworthy was the encore of Abba’s Mama Mia led by the 3 trombones which drew the concert to a memorable close. The concert was initially planned to celebrate the completion of urgent church repair works costing an estimated £76,500. However, during the works, chronic rotting of the vital “wall plate” between the Nave and North Aisle was discovered giving rise to additional costs of £7,000. Despite this, part of the North Aisle was open to the audience during the interval so that the extent of the works could be viewed and £440 was raised to go towards the additional cost of the repairs. A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the evening such a sucess and the many people from Llangarron and the Ross area who turned out on such a dreadful evening to support us. |
